Unlike most garage LPs, it's certainly not a substitute for a night out it's more a statement on modern-day British youth, complete with all the references to Playstations, Indian takeaway, and copious amounts of cannabis you'd expect. It was Mike Skinner, producer and MC, the half-clued-up, half-clueless voice behind club hits "Has It Come to This?" and "Let's Push Things Forward." Facing an entire full-length of Streets tracks hardly sounded like a pleasant prospect, but Skinner's debut, Original Pirate Material, is an excellent listen - much better than the heavy-handed hype would make you think. When Streets tracks first appeared in DJ sets and on garage mix albums circa 2000, they made for an interesting change of pace instead of hyper-speed ragga chatting or candy-coated divas (or both), listeners heard banging tracks hosted by a strangely conversational bloke with a mock cockney accent and a half-singing, half-rapping delivery.

As Mike explains “during a great period of intense mixing we decided that it might be nice to shoot a video.
A video made by Mike’s Beat Stevie cohort Ted Mayhem, it sees Mike walking across France. In anticipation of Everything Is Borrowed, The Streets will be giving away a free download The Escapist from 30th July. It’s a charming, thoughtful and incisive album melding the very best components of the first three albums while managing to, as ever, sound refreshingly new. Everything Is Borrowed is a reminder of why we all fell in love with The Streets in the first place. Which brings us neatly to 2008 – The Streets fourth album is complete and set for release on September 15th. It also gave a totally authentic but superbly artful voice to the real middle England – the middle England not of warm beer and cricket, but of Barratt Homes and Bacardi Breezers.įast forward to his last album The Hardest Way To Make An Easy Living (2006) - perhaps the most action-packed thirty-seven minutes in the history of pop, or rap, or rock and roll come to that – was nothing short of a voyage to the heart of celebrity darkness.

His follow up A Grand Don’t Come For Free (2004) - a concept album, a hip-hopera, whatever you wanted to call it - took Skinner to a completely new level of success (three million copies sold, a number one single and album, multiple Brit and Ivor Novello awards). Six years ago The Streets’ Mercury Prize-nominated debut album Original Pirate Material seemed to emerge from nowhere and established Mike Skinner as a witty and original MC-ing proposition – a motor-mouthed phoenix from the ashes of the UK garage scene.
